Empowering Discussions

Everyone is talking about Net Neutrality. Take action now.

As a human rights activist, internet equality means saving lives by sharing voices! As an artist and writer who uses the internet to earn an income, net neutrality is crucial to my success! We have to rise up loudly and make sure this new administration doesn’t give our power of community to corporations! Citizens United already states that profits are more important than people. !Ya basta! Call your representatives, write letters, sign petitions and if you can join an action to stop the FCC from selling out. We, the taxpayers should have more rights than corporations!
You can learn more and FIND AN ACTION NEAR YOU on the Rise Up Times blog.
“Enough is enough: It’s time to go all in for the open internet. More than 600 protests across the country have already been scheduled! This is an easy and fun way to show up for Net Neutrality, connect with other open-internet supporters, and send a message to Congress and the FCC. Click here to find a rally near you, or sign up to host one!”

Urgent: FCC Chairman Ajit Pai has scheduled a Dec. 14 vote to roll back the Title II Net Neutrality rules. That means it’s time to amp up our efforts to save the open internet.

Don't end Net Neutrality

We’ve seen a tremendous amount of activism to protect Net Neutrality, and people like you have made the phones at the FCC and in Congress ring off the hook. This response has been amazing and it’s working: Lawmakers are tweeting and writing letters to express their support for the FCC’s Net Neutrality rules.

If you have not yet had the opportunity to respond,

Now that we have everyone’s attention, it’s time to take to the streets. [See below for protests in the Twin Cities area.)

If the FCC succeeds in killing Net Neutrality, companies like Verizon will be able to censor online content and pick and choose what you can see…

D.I.Y. Therapy

D.I.Y. Therapy: Listen To Your Body

Despite the years of heart-work I have put into healing, life is bumpy and I feel it. Things happen that cause me to feel sad and concerned. It’s a slippery slope that I’m well aware of. If I don’t take action, I will slide down into that dark valley of depression. Phuck that! I spent enough time down there, now I’m scaling mountain peaks!

One way I can do this, is by listening to my body and honoring what I need. Sometimes I need to rest and sometimes I need to move!

So yesterday when I woke up feeling sad, homesick and a little queasy, I chose movement as my boost. I walked around the park, played a few favorite songs, and stretched along the way. By the end of the walk, I was feeling balanced again. Once I start moving, my body gets happy and then it tells my mind to get happy and then I can focus or face off on what is most important. Movement has been working great the past few years. I dance more, sometimes even in public, I stretch regularly and I move when my body feels tight.

I also rest when I need to. So if your low energy or sadness is spurred by being everything and doing everything, make yourself slow down. Take a nap, go to bed earlier or sleep in later. Your body needs to rest! The older you get, the more rest it needs.

If you’re serious about depression, you also need to watch what you consume. Soda is out and vegetable juice is in!Eat vitamin rich foods. Especially make sure you take Vitamin D & B. Those can really help your energy level.

So if you are feeling low energy, listen to what your body needs. Healing depression is a whole-self journey. It’s mental, physical and emotional. Let yourself explore what feels good and what wears you out. Decide for yourself what you need, don’t just rely on what works for someone else. Healing starts with you!

PS. If you want more support, I created a free e-course to help with depression D.I.Y. Therapy: Healing Depression. Its FREE, you don’t have to sign up or pay. I created it because I know the pain of depression.

Poetry

Poetry: Existing Without Words

“Human traits that span the entire spectrum…” said Omar.

Each of us seeing the world through different lenses

Neither good nor bad

We exist

We are born in our unique truths

Words were meant to help us

We used them to label us, betray us

Why do we insist on who is good and who is bad?

How do we decide who is right and who is wrong?

Where can we go without words?

What if we used words to heal, to lead us to different ideas, to a world where words are simply suggestions, not rules.

I was me, but they labeled me different

They told me I was wrong, that I was bad, that I was broken

I believed them, their words became my religion

Living it for seventeen years

Dying a little each day.

Finally, I said -ya basta-

Those are not my labels

I will define myself

Now I have changed again, a stronger version of me

I am removing the labels

Peeling off each one carefully so as not to leave any marks

I exist without words

You exist without words

Once upon a time we all existed without words

Maybe one day we will live that way again.

Art

Creating. Inspiring. Beautiful. You Are All of Those Things.

I love creating messages that inspire beauty.
I love the act of drawing.
Drawing is my meditation, focusing on details with a single train of thought on my subject is calming and inspiring.

I want to continue having time to create. I want to share my art with the world. This desire isn’t born of just wanting to earn an income. Rather, it is because I want to soothe wounds, heal broken places, spark radical self-love in each of us.

Travel

Living the Nomad Life and Loving it

It’s been two months since I leaped into a new adventure and I’m loving it. There have been obstacles that caused me to stop and wonder what I’m doing, but overall it’s radical.

Back in September, I started doing work trades through workaway. You can see that post “A New Adventure – Working My Way Across the Country“. I’m currently a my fifth work trade and in a week will be at my sixth. Each place has offered me something special and I’m so grateful for that.

My first workaway was at a raw food retreat center where I mostly worked outside in the dirt and beauty of the high New Mexican mountains. That place gave me a sense of peace and calm that only comes when I’m out in the country, away from the constant noise and motion of the city. Venturing outside at night, the sky lit up with more stars than I could ever see in the San Diego night sky. It was awe-inspiring.

My second workaway was at a homestead in the city of Albuquerque, NM. I also spent most of my time working outside on a variety of tasks including moving mulch, pulling weeds and helping with chores. I got to experience a composting toilet. It didn’t smell bad like I had worried, though there was definitely a smell, but that was more from the hemp mulch that I used to compost my excrement. The homestead was in close proximity of my sister’s family. I was so happy to spend more time with them than a usual weekend visit would give us.

My third workaway has been my favorite so far. I worked at a house for a couple of teachers south of Boston, MA. Almost everything was outdoors, such as helping with the chickens, gardening and chopping wood. I’m okay with never chopping wood again. Ha! It’s a very physical task. The couple was so friendly and so comfortable, I often forgot that I wasn’t at home. They invited me to some really cool events, like Honk Fest, a music and activism event in Boston, Mass. One of my favorite parts was when a couchsurfer stayed over one night. The next day, we rode bicycles to a cranberry festival. Seeing how cranberries are harvested and tasting their sweet tartness straight off the plant was delicious. That workaway was so enjoyable, that I was sad to leave.

My fourth workaway was in Shelburne Falls, MA, a beautiful small rural town in the western part of the state. My hosts were very warm and inviting. She was an artist and writer. He was an English professor. They made me feel right at home. My work there varied from inside and outdoor chores. The most memorable was herding four goats! I never fancied myself a goat herder, but I think I would like it full-time. It’s very meditative to stand in a beautiful field and watch goats. Having a host who is also a writer and artist was inspiring. I finished my first zine and had fun making art just for fun, not to sell. Click here to read my new zine, “Radical”.

Before venturing off to my fifth workaway, I spent a few days in Salem, MA to reconnect with a long time friend and experience a truly marvelous Halloween. I highly recommend visiting Salem for Halloween or any time of year. Seeing a place with such a rich and tragic history was a learning experience and a good study of human nature. I plan on returning soon t explore more of the area.

So, now it’s November and I’m in southern Connecticut, just an hour from New York City. This is my first visit to New England and I am excited to see a part of the country that has always seemed so far away and so different. At this workaway my work is mostly indoors, helping with organizing and cleaning. my host family is a fun change of pace with two young children and a lot of activities.

I’m enjoying this opportunity to travel and work, while trying to find a balance with my art and writing. Deep inside, I know this journey is exactly what I need. I don’t know where it’s leading me, but I know that I’m going somewhere good.

grief and gardening

Visit Barnes & Noble or Amazon to buy a copy of my book about grief and gardening!

Grief is a changing of seasons in our own garden.
Gardens are a space for healing. With the cycle of life and death so close at hand, we have an opportunity to learn many lessons. In the garden, we can see the interconnectedness of our own life. We learn how the soil, once seen as nothing but dirt, reveals that it is teeming with life. Plants remind us the importance of self-care as we must give them just enough, but not too much, water and be on the lookout for toxins and insects that might cause harm. The beauty of flowers that only bloom once or twice a year teach us patience. When plants die we can better understand that nothing is permanent and remember to live in the present.
