Book Review “Talking Back: Voices of Color”

Talking Back; Voices of Color” edited by Nellie Wong

If you’re searching for inspiration and want to get involved in creating positive sustainable change for everyone, read this book. You will gain valuable insights in regards to education, human rights, racism, immigration, oppression, war and the harsh realities of our justice system. Each voice offers ways to become involved, from taking small actions in our communities to creating broader government reform for the people and equality across borders. Women’s voices are given ample space to share their own insight and experience which is often missing from similar books.

I was inspired by all the voices from such diverse backgrounds who are so bravely taking on injustice and inequality. Here are some of my favorites.

“At one time, I was confused about who had it better or worse – immigrants or Blacks? But now I realize that it is not a ranking of oppression that matter, but who leads to unite us for radical change.” -Norma Gallegos

“People of color, immigrants, the homeless, youth, women, queers, dissenters and striking unionists all have the legal right to be free from police abuse. True, that right is violated every hour. But by uniting with each other in the streets and on civilian review boards we can take some important steps toward making that right on paper a right in reality.” -Emily Woo Yamasaki

“During a study group…I learned the true history of the civil right movement in the US and women’s decisive role in it. And became conscious for the first time that I was part of a huge working class. That’s when I grasped that standing up against social injustice like bigotry against immigrants, police violence and racism was just plain necessary.” -Karla Alegria

“It is the job of those who have lived through many of Uncle Sam’s wars to say to our young hermanas and hermanos: Gente, without you, the US can’t maim and drop it’s bombs around the world. Resist, and we will be beside you.” -Moises Montoya

There are so many more voices on important issues that should be heard and I’m so grateful to have read this collection. If you’re ready to be inspired get this book through Red Letter Press,

Book Reviews, Grief

Book Review: “Not in the Pink” by Tina Martel

Not In The Pink” by Tina Martel

Although I am no Snow White I am living with the seven chemo dwarves. Itchy, Weepy, Weary, Drippy, Achy, Queasy, Bitchy. They bring a friend, Wimpy.” -Tina Martel

Are you looking for a book about dealing with cancer that isn’t bent toward the heroic, and cheerful? As an artist, Tina Martel does an amazing job of recording her battle with cancer with poignant imagery and words that sting. This is a mixture of darkness and fear, hope and humor, love and letting go of eyelashes.

Her book takes you through the realities of a cancer diagnosis without shying away from the painful treatment, nausea, mood swings, the loss of independence and balance, the confused stares, wayward words, uncomfortable silences and the fear of not knowing if you will survive.

Her journey includes surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, homeopathic and prescription drugs and attempts by herself and others to alleviate the dark clouds that overhang a possibility of looming death.

I laughed and cried while reading this book. It brought back my own memories of when my mother battled cancer. A battle she eventually lost. Reading this book was therapeutic in that it reminded me that we really have no clue where our lives will lead, but we are in control of how we react to the journey.

Book Review: “When All Balls Drop; The Upside Of Losing Everything”

When All Balls Drop; The Upside Of Losing Everything” by Heidi Seifkas

One moment Heidi was taking out the trash and the next she woke up in the hospital because a tree limb fell, crushing her body and knocking her unconscious. On top of that she discovered her husband was cheating on her. Stuck in the hospital and then a brace for many months she lost her independence, her ability to work and her marriage. Yet despite this trauma Heidi was able to heal, find hope and regain her power. Her transparency about a terrible time in her life made this a refreshing read.

My favorite parts of her story are the moments when she openly shares her fears and problems with family and friends and even an occasional stranger. When Heidi shared her experience about the accident and her husbands infidelity others responded with their own similar problems offerng advice and empathy. An important lesson I’ve embraced is that reaching out to others can be so healing. It offers us the chance to receive empathy when we need it most. Empathy is very important in a world with so many challenges and such strife. It also allows us to connect with others on a deeper level. As social animals we can give and get so much more from life when we take the chance to connect with others. I highly recommend being brave and sharing honestly with your family and friends. By connecting deeper we can create stronger relationships and closer communities.

The tree limb itself didn’t upend her life, but it was the catalyst that pushed her to make hard decisions that would change her life direction and allow her to take a new journey. Have you ever experienced a sudden change or loss that shook you to the core and created a new outlook on life or forced you to change unhealthy habits? If not, do you feel ready for change, for something new? You don’t have to wait for tragedy to strike before you make changes. If you need inspiration get this book and see what golden nuggets you can glean from Heidi’s experience and use in your own life. Through deeply personal anecdotes she shares the light and dark sides of a major health issue, divorce and regaining her physical independence.

In the midst of pain, grief and loss it can be hard to see any light at the end of a dark tunnel. However I’ve often noticed that those moments and years which are so challenging become important parts of our journeys, shaping us as they shake us to our core. In the epilogue Heidi writes, “After nine months of the most painful, challenging obstacles I had faced in my life, I understood that on that September afternoon, I had not been at the wrong place at the wrong time; I was at the right place at the right time.”

Book Review: “Self-Love Diet: The Only Diet That Works” by Michelle Minero – This isn’t a traditional “”diet” book!

The Self Love Diet: The Only Diet That Works” is not a book about losing physical weight or how to diet better. It is an opportunity to lose the mental weight of our issues that chain us to eating disorders.

Author Michelle Minero, a licensed therapist, shares invaluable lessons and therapies that any of us can use to create a healthier life which doesn’t involve obsessing over our pant size. Her book may be that extra tool you need to retrieve your inner strength and heal from an eating disorder. As she says in the book, “We need to be able to tap into the potency of the power that comes from loving ourselves.” She cautions that though it is “tricky”, it is absolutely possible.

diet book, self love, michelle minero, eating disorder bookSome of the points I really enjoyed were about the damaging effects of becoming malnourished from eating poorly, the effects of family, religious and ethnic beliefs which can cause hate or love toward our bodies and learning how to see our bodies as instruments vs. ornaments.

She also writes about the science of mirror neurons which are a relatively new discovery that explain how we learn by watching others and absorbing ideas. Have you ever tried the exercise of looking into a mirror and telling yourself “I love you”? The first time I tried this I felt silly, but over time I’ve noticed that it does make me feel good to see myself saying I love you. It’s similar to when a family or friend tells me they love me. Self-love is indeed as important as receiving and giving love to others.

Each chapter offers action steps and loving exercises you can take to heal or help someone heal. My favorite action to take is starting a self-love journal. For most of my life I’ve used writing to help me with issues and heal from trauma. Starting a journal can feel daunting so I recommend you personalize your journal and make it fun. In my journal I write inspiring quotes to myself and decorate each page with colors and illustrations.

While I don’t personally have an eating disorder, this book is a great reminder to love my own body after the many years I spent degrading myself in a vain attempt to look as beautiful as an airbrushed model.

I highly recommend reading this book if :

-You are dealing with an eating disorder.

-You have a loved one, or even a co-worker, who is dealing with an eating disorder.

-You have a poor body image.

-You want to learn more about eating disorders.

*Be aware the author does mention God, however it is not to push a specific religion down your throat, but as a spiritual resource. If it was religious I wouldn’t be reading it.

Something Fun: Interview with Deborah Bailey, Author of “Family Pride: Love and Challenges”

I met Deborah Bailey online years ago and was impressed with her sci-fi short story collection, “Electric Dreams: Seven Futuristic Tales”. Deborah has since published the fantasty/scifi “Hathor Legacy” series and her most recent book “Family Pride: Love and Challenges”.  I asked her to write about her inspiration for this book and she graciously agreed. I hope this inspires you to take control and write your own story figuratively and literally! Enjoy…

downloadI’ve always been into science fiction and fantasy. Star Trek, the original Twilight Zone, Superman comics—you name it. So of course once I started writing short stories, and later, novels, I created fictional worlds based on the “geekery” I grew up with.

What I learned from writers like Rod Serling (the creator, and often writer of Twilight Zone) and science fiction author, Octavia Butler, was that I could comment on real-world situations in my stories.

The Family Pride story has a lion shapeshifter at the center. Shapeshifters (particularly werewolves) are very popular characters in fantasy, horror and paranormal romance.

In Family Pride: Love and Challenges, the shapeshifters live among humans, but most people don’t know of their existence. Though I didn’t go into a lot of history, in the book I mentioned that shapeshifters evolved as humans did. They lived together rather peaceably until certain people began to see them as a threat.

In my shifter world, the mythological creatures who were half-human, half-beast actually existed. But over time, instead of being seen as gods, they were hunted and persecuted. This led to the shifter population deciding to go underground in order to avoid detection.

In the present day, my hero, Mac is an entrepreneur and my heroine, Zora is a human woman. Through her introduction to the shifter world, the reader learns the backstory.

My story is a sexy romance, because I wanted to take shapeshifters, who are often depicted as menacing, and drop them into the everyday world. Something, or someone, who is different doesn’t have to be scary or frightening. (Check out horror stories like Frankenstein and The Wolf Man to see how fear of the “other” is woven into those narratives.)

Since I wanted to keep this story relatively light, I made it a romance. For the most part, we all crave relationships—whether they be romantic or friendly. What I like about writing romance is the relationship aspect is front and center.

My characters navigate work, play, love and life—though not without conflict and disappointments. But that’s what makes a good story, whether it’s science fiction, fantasy, or any other genre.

Book Description

Business owner Mac MacKinnon is a perfect catch: attractive, ambitious and successful. He’s a member of an old, established pride of lion shapeshifters, but determined to live life as a loner. Except that when Zora Mason walks into Mac’s coffee bar one day and applies for the position of assistant manager, he knows without a doubt he’s met the woman of his dreams.

Can she accept life with a shifter-boyfriend?

Zora knows a lot more about Mac (and the other shifters in town) than she’s been letting on. Falling in love with a sexy shifter is more than she bargained for when it comes to dealing with sibling drama, learning the business, and managing an alpha male who’s used to doing things his way. When a challenge to Mac’s Pride threatens to destroy Mac’s family, Zora has to decide whether to be claimed as his mate in a ritual in front of the pride.

Who knew that love with a lion shifter would be so challenging?

Book Reviews

Book Review: “The Center of Me: The Journey to Finding Your Inner Coach” by Laura L. Barry

“The Center of Me: The Journey to Finding Your Inner Coach” by Laura L. Barry is a worthwhile guide to becoming your own personal cheerleader in life. She encourages readers to be grateful and “celebrate” what we’ve learned instead of beating ourselves(something I used to do to myself with all my time and energy). “We need to take full responsibility and be held accountable, but we don’t have to beat ourselves up.”

The key points I enjoyed in this book are as follows.

  • Investigate emotions, patterns and situations instead of ignoring or exacerbating issues.I am able to do this more and more when I either make a mistake or feel unsure about my next step. It’s amazing what we can realize about ourselves if we stop and look at the bigger picture as well as ask ourselves serious questions.
  • Become authentic and use your “choice” to fix or walk away from people and relationships. This can be difficult if like me you want people to like you and not make others feel bad. I used to think of others before myself a lot and all that did was allow me to ignore my own priorities.
  • Embrace your resistance, explore and discover what is behind it to move forward. When changing your thoughts notice resistant habits. “Remember, resistance is a form of fear.” I remember how hard it was for me to accept the idea that I was lovable and imperfectly perfect. It was as if those bullies from the past were still controlling my thoughts. I wanted change, but I allowed my fear and doubt to hold me back
  • Be present, don’t get swept up in your past mistakes or the mistakes of others. This is something I used to spend a lot of time doing. I thought it was easier to focus on what I did wrong in the past than to focus on moving forward, but once I stopped focusing on the past I discovered that life is so much simpler by living in the present and preparing for my best future.

My favorite exercise was to write a letter to my younger self, thank her for doing the best she could and show compassion. Other exercises I enjoyed included discovering what nourishes me; mind, body and soul as well as what has the opposite effect and investigating resistance, attachment and personal stories that mold me and hold me back.

In the end, Laura reminds us that “Our minds are very powerful and we are much too tolerant of mind-wandering, blaming and criticizing. Being aware of our thoughts is very old wisdom.” I recommend her book if you are ready to be in control of your destiny.

Happiness and Individual Empowerment? Book Review “Lucky Go Happy: Make Happiness Happen” by Paul van der Merwe

In the realm of individual empowerment, cultivating happiness from inside ourselves is very important. We can buy things that make life easier and fun or change our appearance to stroke our ego, but those aren’t sustainable sources as we will always need to buy more when that happiness fades. However if we look within to see what makes us feel good in a healthy balanced way then we can be happy even when life is not going our way, face disappointment or get stuck in a rut.

I recently read a book on the subject, “Lucky Go Happy: Make Happiness Happen” by Paul van der Merwe. In the book introduction he writes, “Happiness is a complex puzzle. Every chapter of Lucky Go Happy covers a piece of that puzzle and provides insights into the workings of happiness.” Through a clever and enjoyable adventure by the main character, Lucky the rat, the author reminds readers that true happiness involves a combination of our actions, thoughts, and daily activities As Lucky travels across the land he encounters animals, birds, insects and even trees who share with him their own adventures of finding happiness.

Each chapter shows us different forms of happiness. My favorites included an elephant who learned a new skill, the butterfly enjoying each stage of life, a rhino living in gratitude and a Baobab tree who realized happiness is not conditional. Buy this book at Bookstore.authorhouse.com or Amazon and follow Lucky Go Happy on Facebook and Goodreads.

I know full well the dangers of trying to buy happiness and shopping my way out of depression. For over a decade I used money as a tool for happiness not realizing that it wasn’t and never was going to work. Once I was deep in debt, real happiness slowly dawned on me. By forcing myself to rethink the lifestyle I created and stepping out of my comfort zone with baby steps I finally feel happy from the inside. Yes some days and moments I struggle, but now I can check myself out of a negative state much faster and with the power of my thoughts, not my wallet. I understand that happiness is an inside job.

What makes you happy in the long run, without spending money or using drugs, narcotics or alcohol?

Book Reviews

Book Review: “Fixing American Government: Ending Gridlock and Apathy with a 21st Century Constitution” by Jeffrey R. Orenstein, PhD.

I’m a person of action and love to read books that offer solutions to problems while gaining more knowledge on social issues. I enjoy sharing resources on this blog that allow you to become empowered and be the change you want to see. One sustainable way to create long-lasting change is through political action. It’s how (legal)slavery ended, women won the right to vote, how civil rights abuses were rectified and how we set up a social safety net available to all citizens.

Civic involvement is something we can and should all participate in because policy and government affect our daily lives. Unfortunately the masses seem more interested in material wealth and personal gain. I often hear people complain about costs of living, police brutality government inadequacy, taxes, and corruption, but rarely do more than sign an online petition for change, if that even.

Why does our nation seem to be crumbling with injustice, greed, corruption and poverty? Because hundreds of years ago “we” pledged allegiance to a republic set up by a relatively small congregation of men who wanted to build a new free nation, but were hesitant to give the majority any power in government and who didn’t envision their constitution for such a large and diverse nation. We’ve since ended many of their practices(such as those listed earlier), gave significantly more power to the masses and grown. Unfortunately we also awarded money the right to vote and gave breaks to large corporations at the expense of public rights and freedom to choose our government.

Excerpts from Orensteins book:

“In this environment, public opinion has a difficult time gaining influence. It must be very strong, consistent, and loud for a long time before its effect is felt on policy makers and pressures them to override the influence of special interests.”

“The conclusion is that, despite beliefs to the contrary, the U.S. has evolved into a hybrid partially-democratic republic and not a representative democracy. The stark reality is that the American people can never go to the ballot box and elect or un-elect a whole government, which is a requirement for indirect democracy and an incentive for government adherence to public opinion. Perhaps low voter turnout is due to the sense (even unconsciously) that voting seldom changes things in a fundamental manner.”

“Since we believe that the American political system is the epitome of democracy perfected, we feel little need to enact reforms that would make our system more democratic.”

It’s definitely time to enact minor changes in our government to reflect our nations current needs. Some of my favorite changes mentioned in this book are as follows:

-Increased civic education at K-12 grades.

-More neutral journalism as opposed to headline/scandal journalism.

-Bridge the disconnect between politicians and constituents.

-Make voting easier for the majority, such as longer time to place votes as opposed to one day and allow voter registration on election days.

-End “pay to play” politics so that those who want to be involved in government are not discouraged by their small bank accounts.

-Remove money from politics; limit spending by special interest groups and overturn Citizens United.

-Appoint more judges so the “backlog” of cases are brought up to date.

-Televise Supreme Court cases.

Overall I enjoyed reading this book and recommend it for anyone who wants a refresher on how our government works along with those who are interested in ways to improve democracy in the USA. Grab your own copy of this book and learn more about Jeffrey R. Orenstein at these links:

How Do Our Genes Effect Our Personal Development? Find Out With “Quanology” by John Khoury

“Quanology is about nature – our nature and our relationship to the nature that created us.”

3D_cover_mediumThis week I read an advance copy of an upcoming book “Quanology” by John Khoury. It offers an easy to understand way of explaining the scientific side of humanity and sociology from an evolutionary viewpoint. He mixes science with personal development to create a guiding book for those of us who want more from life than a winning lottery ticket. Our biological instincts and cultural history are often in conflict with our present technological and cultural situation causing problems worldwide. We’re not basically selfish, we’re “gene-ish” as the author says, that is to mean our genes are guiding us and we’re still following those basic instincts which evolved over thousands of years. The book explores how we use strategy and resources in everything from creating governments to dating just so our genes can proliferate. He does this with a sense of humor which always helps when thinking about BIG ideas that encompass all of humanity. The message is clear, nature forces us to compete and or cooperate because that’s how we survive and thrive. Evolution doesn’t stand still and I like how this book explains that process.

The science of why and how shows that we should make time to look at our lives objectively and use critical thinking, which if you’re a regular reader of this blog you know is a main message in my posts. At the beginning of each day while our genes may be guiding us the choices we make and actions we take are what ultimately drives evolution forward.

I recall learning about natural selection in school, but never in the context of how we can use the theory to improve our life. In school I learned how to memorize and repeat what was taught so I received good grades. Then I graduated HS, started working and living independently and realized that method only helped me learn the most basic of skills. At some schools(my family moved often so I attended many) we had classes like accounting, home-economics and sex-education to prepare us for grown up life, but that is not enough of what should be taught in the form of “life skills”. As the author notes in his section on education, “I didn’t understand that I could be good at life by studying and practicing life. It never occurred to me. It wasn’t a part of school, so I didn’t think it was a subject.” Does this ring true to you? Are you starting to understand that education is more than learning math and english? Then you should read this book.

Our species just about stopped evolving so long ago you may be asking, what has evolution done for me recently? Well not much, but it does have one function that I find to be very helpful. In order to stay sane when learning about terrible news I remind myself that we are a bunch of animals who have to evolve into higher beings and evolution like that takes a lot of time. As an example from this book, the author writes in regards to how slavery used to be legal, but is now illegal. “The writing is on the wall to have it wiped off the earth soon enough . . . “soon” for evolution, that is.” Doesn’t that make you feel optimistic? So the next time you hear bad news and all you feel capable of doing is signing a petition to stop such atrocities, remember that we are improving, but humans evolve SLOWLY. This isn’t an excuse to slack off, but instead should inspire you to keep being the change you want to see. Evolution follows revolutionary ideas.

As far as self-development books go this is one of the best. I recommend this book for anyone with a curiosity for why the human world works as it does, science and sociology teachers, curious students, those looking for a more sustainabe life and hopeless romantics so they can have some balance and not be so hopeless.

Book Review: “The Big Wide Calm” by Rich Marcello

I didn’t want to stop reading this book. It has a great empowering message that fits in with this blogs theme of individual empowerment.

book2One telling trait of a great book is reaching the last page and craving more, which is what happened at the end of The Big Wide Calm. This alluring story is full of surprises making it difficult to put down. You may think you know how things will end, but the twists and turn are not predictable; you will be surprised at how each one plays out.

This is a story of Sex, Love and Rock n’ Roll, without the painful drug addictions and unsettling backstabbing associated with too many rock to riches stories. This writer handles drama well without exasperating the reader with unnecessary conflict. The main character Paige is strong and confident in her abilities with a humor and kindness that keeps you rooting for her. Following her revelation of who she can become as opposed to who she thought she would be is inspiring. She is as invested in her music and aspirations as she is in her romantic entanglements and friendships. The characters surrounding her are intriguing and really complement Paiges’ journey.

A plus that you don’t always find in stories about musicians on their road to fame are the enchanting lyrics to the songs that Paige creates throughout the story. The lyrical development is an integral part of her journey and one of my favorite parts. I recommend this book for anyone who loves to read about following dreams, lasting friendships, intimate romance and of course music. Even more this book offers a broader message of seeking our own paths in a world that is at best confounding.
