god and gender don’t mix

God and Gender don’t mix!  For me this is just like the saying “Drinking and Driving don’t mix! ” How can you have a peaceful equal world where only one gender is considered powerful or holy?  No wonder women have a history such low self esteem. No wonder we have to fight so hard every day for a right to have power over ourselves!

If I had been raised in a church where there was a holy, all powerful, all knowing father and son, but no holy, powerful, all knowing mother or daughter I would think that women were pretty lame and not powerful. I suppose this is what really bothers me about organized religions.  Actually the whole “don’t think for yourself because I am right and you are wrong” part bugs me a lot too. Why is the only mother a virgin and what does she do other than give birth to a son? This is a rhetorical question.  For me this whole ” obey your heavenly father” line has always seemed like a pathetic excuse to control women.

This is not an “anti-male” post, it is a “pro-equality” post. I was inspired to write this by my friend and mentor Jane Claypool. Read her blog post about women and new thought here:  http://janeclaypool.com/2012/04/19/women-and-new-thought/

Believe what makes YOU happy, but don’t let your beliefs put you down.  Do you think you are worthy of being loved and supported?

Looking at Aging With Stars in My Eyes

I love this article about menopause in Ode magazine. It brings up a good point about how we as a society tend to look at youth as the goal and getting older as last place.  The writer shares how we have become so vain about our “packaging” and how we forget that age is a wonderful part of life because we learn and grow and appreciate life more.

Two of my favorite parts of this article are these: “All the while, we’re missing out on an enlightening journey, one that’s vital for anyone who wants to grow as a human being. Let’s talk about this side of the story: getting older as an experience that can be personally valuable to each and every one of us.” and “I didn’t fear the physical aging; I come from a family of strong women who look good well into old age. I also try to keep myself healthy through vitamins, walking, strength training and nutrition.”

Personally I look forward to no longer having a period each month or worrying about birth control. If I could choose to start menopause now I would.

Weird Fiction: Decaying Canvas

I just really enjoyed this short short story. It was quick, colorful clever and enjoyable. I smiled at the end.

Book Reviews, I Am More Than Just a Girl Book

Books a Plenty

I delivered 10 books to a group of lovely young women that I used to work with.  They were very receptive and excited to get the book. I can hardly wait to hear their opinions of it.

I have a box of envelopes stuffed with books and curriculum that will head out to various youth organizations from San Francisco to Pennsylvania.   I have another smaller box of envelopes stuffed with books that will be going to various magazines, including Ms. Magazine.  I talked to an associate editor at Ms. and am very anxious to hear their opinion of the book. My goal is to have I Am More Than Just a Girl featured in a popular national magazine or 10.

I also have one for the Ellen show. I want to talk about my book on her show. I love Ellen. She is such a positive person and of course hilarious.

I even sold a book. It will be going to a young woman whose aunt really wants her to have this book.  Things are looking up and I am in a great mood as I have been since writing my book.

Soon the only book in my room will be my personal copy.

DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO COULD USE A COPY?

Artwednesday

I was going to call it wartsday, but didn’t want to have people think I was celebrating wart day. Is there a wart day?  There probably should be. Anyway…. I drew these this week. I have been on a face-profile-crazy-hair kick for a while and am loving it.

I am mailing signed cards to fans on my Facebook page.

Live Your Life Like…

I have always found the saying “Live each day as if it were your last” to be inspirational, but a bit too pressure filled. My “before it is too late” list is too long.  So I switched it around to “Live each day as if it were your first.”  Because first days are full of wonder, curiosity, excitement, nerves, all sorts of possibilities and unlimited opportunities.

Just think of your first day at school, first day at a new job,  first date, first competition, first game of the season, first trip to a new country or first child.   Not every school was joyful, not every job great, and not every date worth remembering. Still the excitement of not knowing and wondering is always something that piques my interest.   The bottom line is we must live a life that makes each of our unique selves happy.

How do you want to live each day? The same? Different?

For all you Graduates and Grads to be!

Last night I read two amazing blog posts from recent college grads.  Both of these are women who in the face of a bad economy are taking actions to push their life forward instead of simply complain about their bad fortune. The blogs are posted in Project Eve and can be read at the following links:

“College Graduate Conundrum” by Heidi Idrovo

“My Post Grad Experience and Landing Freelance Writing Jobs” by Emilia Minero

What was your experience with being a college graduate? Leave a comment!

For me it was overwhelming and scary, but in a much better economy than today. I am thankful those days are behind me. Now I know there is always a different path to take that will get me to my destination.

A Yardstick of Quality

“Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren’t used to an environment where excellence is expected.”  Steve Jobs,  Apple Computers.

This quote sticks with me because it rings so true. I see so many people living in ignorance and poverty because the only excellence they see is the pretend world of movies and TV.   How do some rise above this attitude and “move up”  out of ghettos and abuse when others never try?

People are a riddle to me and knowing that is what keeps me from getting mad at every little bad pass, rude remark or angry confrontation.  How can you judge someone who has had a completely different story as yourself?  The next time you get mad because someone is slacking off or repeatedly being a jerk consider the possibility that is they way they were raised. Then you can decide whether to give them tools to better themselves or to simply walk away.

It is always YOUR choice to excel. What length of quality will YOU be?

Book Reviews

This Book is Alive!

I was able to publish 60 copies of I Am More Than Just a Girl. Those will be arriving in less than 2 weeks and then I will send them out to the youth organizations that signed up and a selection of young women I have worked with.

Thank you so much to everyone who donated AND spread the word about my book. When I give a copy of the book it will include a curriculum I created. Youth leaders can use that to create a lesson around the book and have a discussion with the young women they work with. Thanks to Jane Claypool for help editing the curriculum.
