The Behemouth That Bent Under Pressure of the People: Activists Make Wal-Mart Pay, Literally.

So you think as an individual you can’t create lasting changes? Then it’s time to join a cause and get involved.

Recently the mega consumer chain Wal-Mart announced they would be raising wages(slightly) for their workers along with giving more hours and training programs. This comes after years of workers banding together and saying enough is enough. They demanded a better work environment by actively speaking up, holding rallies, protesting and pressuring politicians. As more and more media outlets picked up the story public disdain of this billion dollar business grew until Wal-Mart had a reputation of supporting poverty wages and mistreating employees for the sake of profit.

While these wage increases and better treatment are a step in the right direction it’s certainly not enough for those who rely on their job at Wal-Mart to support themselves and their families.

“Rodriguez, the California Wal-Mart employee who has participated in protests at Wal-Mart, says he’s happy to get a bump up from $9.40 to $10 an hour next year. He’s also encouraged about the new training. But the 26-year old says the money isn’t enough to support his fiancée and 2-year old son. Emily Wells, a leader of OUR Walmart, a union-backed group of Wal-Mart workers that has been pressing the discounter to start its hourly wages at $15 and increase hours, agrees. She said she’s pleased that the company is addressing issues about pay and erratic scheduling, but Wells, who makes $9.50 an hour and is scheduled to work only 26 hours per week, said the plan comes up short. “Wal-Mart can afford to provide the good jobs that Americans need – and that means $15 an hour, full-time, consistent hours and respect for our hard work,” she said.”

Read more at Nytimes.com/aponline/2015/02/19/us/ap-us-wal-mart-worker-pay-raises

Personally I can’t stand Wal-Mart and haven’t shopped there in years after I found out they refused to pay women equally to men. Business-humanrights.org/en/walmart-lawsuit-re-gender-discrimination-in-usa#c9333

Other reasons to dislike Wal-Mart is the fact that as a mega chain store they put smaller stores out of business and perpetuate pollution by mass producing large quantities of stuff that we don’t really need, seemingly mostly plastic, that eventually ends in landfills or littering streets and waterways.

If you want change you have to get involved. So what are you waiting for?

The Annual 2015 Kale Festival at San Diego Peace Gardens Featured Much More Than Just Kale!

I admit that Kale isn’t my favorite vegetable. I love the nutrients, but it’s a little bitter. So for me it needs to be mixed in with salads, steamed with garlic and olive oil or baked in vegan lasagna. Luckily the Kale Festival at the San Diego Peace Garden offers much more than just kale. There were farm and gardening workshops, craft zones for children, music, vendors selling everything from books and moisturizer to promoting healthier lifestyles and food choices.

They also offered a complimentary lunch with a delicious kale salad, vegan egg salad, and steamed rice with veggies. There was thirst-quenching citrus-ade, and the volunteers at the vegan booth handed out free scrumptious vegan banana bread and vegan cookies. There were plenty of free oranges to eat so I left feeling SATISFIED! They provided utensils that were later collected to be cleaned and reused and placed compost buckets around the festival for food waste and napkins. If only all festivals could be so sustainable.

I attended a fun workshop on growing in containers. Most of my gardening experience is on small country farms and urban gardens so it was neat to learn about growing in confined spaces.  I learned that you can’t casually compost in your indoor planting containers unless you want bugs. I’m used to throwing ends of veggies in the yard or garden to compost on their own so this was important. I also learned that you can use cloth bags to grow strawberries and cut a gallon jug in half and use it is a planter and saucer.

On the bus to the festival I met a friendly couple who told me about the previous years they had been at Kale Fest and shared their experiences with the local organic farms and potlucks and they introduced me to the hosts at the entrance tent.  Attendees at the festival were all friendly and I met a lot of neat people.

I learned that we have a Cacao Fest in San Diego! Cacaofest.com. If you are thinking of going vegan check out LCAsanDiego.org. Personally I try to limit my intake of dairy products to once a week. When you choose to eat less(or eliminate) meat and dairy we will all have a healthier environment,  you will have a healthier body, and create better lives for animals. Think about it.

Monarch butterflies are on the decline, but we depend on these fantastic morphing creatures for pollination. Just like bees, butterflies are important. Monarchs love Milkweed so there were free milkweed seed packets handed out for anyone wishing to create a more hospitable habitat for our fluttery friends.

Book Reviews

Book Review: “Fixing American Government: Ending Gridlock and Apathy with a 21st Century Constitution” by Jeffrey R. Orenstein, PhD.

I’m a person of action and love to read books that offer solutions to problems while gaining more knowledge on social issues. I enjoy sharing resources on this blog that allow you to become empowered and be the change you want to see. One sustainable way to create long-lasting change is through political action. It’s how (legal)slavery ended, women won the right to vote, how civil rights abuses were rectified and how we set up a social safety net available to all citizens.

Civic involvement is something we can and should all participate in because policy and government affect our daily lives. Unfortunately the masses seem more interested in material wealth and personal gain. I often hear people complain about costs of living, police brutality government inadequacy, taxes, and corruption, but rarely do more than sign an online petition for change, if that even.

Why does our nation seem to be crumbling with injustice, greed, corruption and poverty? Because hundreds of years ago “we” pledged allegiance to a republic set up by a relatively small congregation of men who wanted to build a new free nation, but were hesitant to give the majority any power in government and who didn’t envision their constitution for such a large and diverse nation. We’ve since ended many of their practices(such as those listed earlier), gave significantly more power to the masses and grown. Unfortunately we also awarded money the right to vote and gave breaks to large corporations at the expense of public rights and freedom to choose our government.

Excerpts from Orensteins book:

“In this environment, public opinion has a difficult time gaining influence. It must be very strong, consistent, and loud for a long time before its effect is felt on policy makers and pressures them to override the influence of special interests.”

“The conclusion is that, despite beliefs to the contrary, the U.S. has evolved into a hybrid partially-democratic republic and not a representative democracy. The stark reality is that the American people can never go to the ballot box and elect or un-elect a whole government, which is a requirement for indirect democracy and an incentive for government adherence to public opinion. Perhaps low voter turnout is due to the sense (even unconsciously) that voting seldom changes things in a fundamental manner.”

“Since we believe that the American political system is the epitome of democracy perfected, we feel little need to enact reforms that would make our system more democratic.”

It’s definitely time to enact minor changes in our government to reflect our nations current needs. Some of my favorite changes mentioned in this book are as follows:

-Increased civic education at K-12 grades.

-More neutral journalism as opposed to headline/scandal journalism.

-Bridge the disconnect between politicians and constituents.

-Make voting easier for the majority, such as longer time to place votes as opposed to one day and allow voter registration on election days.

-End “pay to play” politics so that those who want to be involved in government are not discouraged by their small bank accounts.

-Remove money from politics; limit spending by special interest groups and overturn Citizens United.

-Appoint more judges so the “backlog” of cases are brought up to date.

-Televise Supreme Court cases.

Overall I enjoyed reading this book and recommend it for anyone who wants a refresher on how our government works along with those who are interested in ways to improve democracy in the USA. Grab your own copy of this book and learn more about Jeffrey R. Orenstein at these links:

Grief

Last Year Grief – This Year Rebirth

… Alternate Title:  The Power of Cupcakes! …

Last year was full of so much grief I couldn’t focus on much else. I eventually felt like I would completely break if I didn’t take some time away and travel. So I left paradise to spend time with family and friends and reconnect. It was very healing. I made the right choice. (See my earlier posts on grief)

Monday was the one year anniversary of my mother’s death. I imagined the day would bring back the pain of losing her. I was pleased to find that I was able to consciously recognize the day and not be overcome with sadness. So I didn’t need the companionship which I told my friend I was sure to need when she suggested we have a rain check for our plans that day. 😉

textgram_1414198627

Instead I woke up and felt healthy. I decided to finally explore Switzer canyon by my new home base. The area was beautiful. I had fun climbing over fallen trees, walking on rocks in the dry bed stream and taking photos of all the natural beauty. Most importantly I set down and meditated, filling up on positive thoughts and clean air.

Later in the day I went home, cleaned and worked in the yard beneath the warm sunshine. I love gardening so that was refreshing. Later I went to run errands and decided to stop at Babycakes in Hillcrest for two delicious cupcakes. One was chocolate with raspberry filling, cream icing and a strawberry on top. The second was German Chocolate with coconut filling. I tried to eat slowly, but they didn’t stand a chance. I sat in the yard staring at a wisteria vine while soaking up sunshine and bathing in the warm breeze.

Photos of authors mom and grandparents circa 1945

After all that I was exhausted and fell asleep, almost missing the chance to see my friend and her family at the park not far off. I took a long walk that evening, chatted with my brother on the phone and realized that the most painful of grief had graciously run its course. I made it through the first anniversary of my mom’s death without falling down and sobbing in pain. Not to say that’s a terrible thing but I much prefer feeling happy and thankful for the time we had.

I still have moments where I want to hold my mother and feel sad that I cannot, but when that happens I allow it to come and go as needed. If I’m doing something important, I use the same exercises that helped me overcome depression. I focus my thoughts on the positive and allow the negative to dissipate. (See my D.I.Y. Therapy posts)

In regards to the loving relationship and wonderful memories I share with my mom I know that I’m lucky, so, so, so lucky. I also understand that if I was still in my previous depressed state the grief would overwhelm me and I would not be able to feel the freedom of missing my mom without the weight of pain. This is something not everybody is able to experience. We all deal with grief in different ways.

Last week I was talking with a friend whose mother had killed herself. My friend mentioned how she didn’t like when people brought up the anniversary of her mom’s death. For her it was a memory she’d soon forget, not one that she wanted pulled into the front of her thoughts.

So if you’re grieving a loved one remember that how you grieve is totally fine. It’s your grief and you will heal if you allow yourself to go at your own pace. Don’t have expectations, just let it be.

If you know someone who is grieving, let them be. Allow them to be sad, angry or happy. Don’t assume you know how another should feel or what “stage” they should be processing. We are all unique.

“Easy Money-Saving Green Tips for Business” by Shel Horowitz – Green Entrepreneur, Author and Speaker

I’m pleased to share this guest article from Shel Horowitz, a business owner who knows the value of creating a better world for all. After the article you should watch his inspiring TED Talk on how smart businesses can create a healthier world.

Easy Money-Saving Green Tips for Business

By Shel Horowitz

Environmental measures can be easy or hard. Go for the easy stuff with the biggest return first. For example:

Most businesses leak huge quantities of heated air in the winter and cooled air in the summer. Simple and very inexpensive measures like insulating outlets and switchplates on outside-facing walls with foam gaskets (and plugging unused outside-wall outlets with baby outlet protectors) can make an immediate difference. So can making sure windows are properly caulked. And ensuring that doors to the outside close tightly and have weather-stripping and heat-trapping rubber sweeps.

Install programmable thermostats to stop heating/cooling air when the building is shut for the night and program them properly: no more than 68° F/ 20° C in the winter, no lower than 75° F/24° C in the summer during working hours, and perhaps 55° F/13° C in the winter and 85° F/29° C in the summer, from half an hour after the end of the workday until half an hour before employees start arriving in the morning.

Plug computers, machinery, and appliances into smart power strips that eliminate “energy vampires” by cutting power to the device when it’s not in use and train your people to flip the power strips off if they’re the last to leave at night.

Cut your paper costs by 40 percent or so by switching to duplexing (two-sided) printers and copiers, setting them to default to two-sided, and training your employees to use that setting when possible. Have a goal that the only single-sided copies are the last pages of documents with an odd number of pages. The amount of paper that can be saved will shock you.

Of course, some few documents do need to be printed one-sided. But often, that’s because they’re going to be used as a reprint master which can be avoided by printing from a digital file instead of a hard copy, gaining higher quality in the process.

Encourage employees to do more on-screen and print less in the first place. Demonstrate the computer settings that display larger print without changing the actual document (for instance, the View-Zoom feature in Microsoft Word and most Internet browsing software)this makes reading on the screen a lot more comfortable, and printing a lot less necessary.

Recycle all the scrap paper in your office. Recycle plastic and metal as well. And switch to recycled copy paper, toilet paper, and paper towels; these days, the latter two don’t have to cost any more than non-recycled, and copy paper is only a bit more.

Change your break room and lounges around with a goal of sustainability: Get rid of disposable cups and buy each employee a personalized coffee mug, plus a few for visitors. Use reusable rags and sponges instead of paper towels. Switch to organic fair-trade coffee, tea, and cocoa. If your business is in a place where the water is drinkable, add a water filter to the sink and educate your employees that using filtered tap water is much greener than bottled, as well as much cheaper for them.

Partner with a local organic farm to offer a once-a-week farmers market in your parking lot or on a lawn, where employees can stock up on fresh organic veggies this costs you nothing, and your people will love it (especially if they live in cities).

Switch to natural/organic pest control and landscaping.

Install an aerator on every faucet.

Prohibit smoking on your campus, but first, announce the deadline, and in the meantime, provide smoking-cessation assistance for employees who need it. (You’ll pay for the program through savings in reduced absenteeism for health reasons, and possibly lower insurance costs. You may also be able to get grant funding or tap into no-cost quit-smoking programs.)

Next, look at steps you can take to make your employees more comfortable and happier, which in turn will make them more productive. Bring houseplants into work areas they chew up carbon dioxide (a major greenhouse gas) and turn it into oxygen. Provide natural lighting where possible. Use fresh air from open windows during the spring and fall, if your building is set up with windows that open. Use curtains and drapes to let in sun in the winter, block it out during the hot summer and to keep heat in during winter nights, while releasing it in summer.

These, of course, are only the tip of the iceberg. We can all cut energy, water, and waste in thousands of ways, many of which, like the measures above, cost little or nothing. I’ve put together 111 of them in a $9.95 ebook called Painless Green: 111 Tips to Help the Environment, Lower Your Carbon Footprint, Cut Your Budget, and Improve Your Quality of Life-With No Negative Impact on Your Lifestyle, http://painlessgreenbook.com

Set aside the money you save from these measures to look at more complex steps, such as adding more insulation, auditing your manufacturing process for energy savings, switching to low-water or even waterless toilets, planting an area of your roof or adding solar panels, going through the LEED or EnergyStar certification process, and so on.

And don’t forget to start talking about all the green things you’re doing in your marketing, on your website, and in your press releases. The marketing benefit alone in some cases, can be enough to cover the capital cost of the next round of improvements.

U.S. Courts Punish Victims of Domestic Violence and Allow Abusers to Walk Free!

The United States “Justice” system still doesn’t understand domestic violence and why victims become too afraid for their lives to leave. In the case of Tondalo Hall, she is being punished in prison for 30 years for the crime of not protecting her children AND suffering abuse at the hands of her violent partner Robert Braxton Jr. who was allowed walked free after 2 years. How does this make sense to anybody?

First of all while victims of  domestic violence are technically putting their children at risk, they are still VICTIMS and therefore should be helped with counseling and treatment. They should not be sent to prison and certainly not for 30 years.

Second why did the abuser Mr. Braxton only receive 2 years of prison when he committed violence against his children and partner? He should be in jail and undergoing counseling and treatment.

So why are we handing out stricter punishments for victims than violent offenders? Two reasons.

Firt, because the system was set up by males who don’t understand and have no empathy for female victims. Blaming a victim for failing to report or flee domestic abuse is akin to blaming a victim of other abuse such as molestation, sexual harassment or rape.

Second, she is in prison because it’s clear that the prosecutor Angela Marsee had a vendetta. She wanted Braxton to go to jail for a long time, and blames the victim for basically not being a good enough witness.

“Marsee also had another reason for recommending a long sentence: Hall, she declared, was part of the reason the case against Braxton “fell apart.

So Marsee wanted justice and when she couldn’t get it with Braxton she turned on the easiest target nearby, Hall.

UGH! How immature is that!

What’s really messed up is authorities know that Robert Braxton Jr. was the abuser, yet they still punished Tolanda Hall much more severely.

“After Braxton admitted he had squeezed his baby daughter too tightly and cranked her leg, detectives concluded that he was the one who had injured both children, not her.

Woman Overcomes Fear By Being Set on Fire and Flying!

We don’t learn limiting beliefs until we’re older. Why else would we bother learning to walk or memorizing a whole language? If you’ve ever had a stroke or tried to learn a new language you get this!

Why do we not follow through on our greatest ambitions? Because we can.  It’s easy to keep yourself from ever achieving your dreams by allowing fear, doubt and socially constructed ideas stop you from trying or trying very hard. That’s why I’m impressed with people like Kalah Ruth. This woman not only overcame her fears, but she is helping others do the same.

She used to be afraid to fly, but through coaching she let go of her limiting beliefs and took to the skies. “I used to be afraid to fly! Over the past year I have completed a personal development course to overcome my fears and understand my emotions. I have since co-piloted a helicopter and flew down a zip line while being set on fire. I was only able to do these things because I learned how to clear limiting beliefs and changed my unhealthy habits.

Now she wants to help others live their dream by becoming a coach like the one who helped her. Check out her campaign to become a certified coach at Gofundme.com/l8o0kk. Please SHARE her campaign and if you can, support her financially.

The Month of Love: This February Give YourSELF a Valentines Gift.

Do you remember receiving Valentines in elementary school, back when the whole class was expected to give Valentines cards to each classmate whether they were friends or not. Then we moved to middle school and love got complicated. Oh how I long for the days when everyone got a card and candy. I refuse to live longing for the past so this year I’m giving myself gifts on V-Day. I saw some cute heart-shaped cookies at the store with fun messages that I can buy for myself.

The other gift will be continuing to practice what I learned in the Self-Love Challenge. I will care for my WHOLE self with unconditional love. My main focus will be emotional and physical health, building healthy relationships with others, cultivating skills that empower me and being the change I want to see.

If you’re looking for guidance to love yourself more check out this post on the Lovewarriorcommunity.com/self-love-diet-writing-prompt-day-31-create-your-self-love-diet-practice

Positive Affirmation Videos for New Beginnings and for Inner Peace

The power of our thoughts is undenible. Whether a daily struggle with depression or a once in a life time competition, our thoughts can be the tipping point to win or lose. I’ve found that repeating positive affirmations throughout each day helps with both healing from painful moments and focused on work.

I highly recommend using affirmations and paying attention to how you feel when you use affirmations as opposed to when you don’t. Notice if your attitude in stressful situations or around negative people improves and if you feel better physically as well as mentally?

Here are two affirmation videos I recently made. If you like either one, please like them on YouTube and share with your loved ones.

What’s your favorite affirmation?

Have you used affirmations to change your attitude?
