Having One of “Those” Days (Weeks/Months/Years)?

We all have bad moments, days, weeks, months and maybe even years where there is no light at the end of the tunnel. There are and will be times when life seems overwhelmingly cruel and unfair. The thing is our universe is not set up to be fair and humans are not always kind. Life ebbs and flows so when you get down in the dumps pull yourself out with mental strength. Instead of focusing on the negatives, what you dont have, focus on what you do have. Remember two things:

1. What you are capable of now.

2. That you will be capable of more as you grow.

It is a universal truth that we are constantly learning new skills, new ways to solve problems, new ideas, and new knowledge. Change your thinking and you will change your life. The possibilities are abundant.

Fully clothed and no stilettos – (in my opinion)

It is the little things that have potential to grow into revolutions and social change, that make me happy. This month I found two fun music videos that I would approve of younger girls watching. What makes them great(in my opinion) are not their catchy lyrics or fun beats. What I noticed was the lack of females wearing barely there clothing or stilettos. Neither of which are wrong for women to wear, but in a society obsessed with showcasing women as strong and or sexy IF and only if they wear hardly anything and or painful shoes, it is refreshing.  This “sexy” image women are sold was so obviously created by men and not for any benefit for women.  I was in dance for years and I never danced in high heels. Obviously some women can and do quite well, but it wouldn’t have worked for my ballet and hip hop classes.

First is appropriate for over 14, “Here’s to Everything” by Misha B. It’s for an older audience because of the seemingly naked(I can’t quite tell) dancing in the beginning which turns into fully clothed dancing later on. She is reminiscent of Janet Jackson in Rhythm Nation. Misha also looks to be at a healthy weight instead of like a twig you could easily snap in two.

Second is appropriate for any age (in my opinion) “21st Century Girl” by Willow Smith which features many young girls wearing funky, punk/pop outfits, running the streets, building a city, on bikes and skateboards, and having FUN! having fun is what little girls are supposed to do.

Now I write this post knowing that some people will be offended because they read this as an attack on them or that I am saying women should be modest and concerned with whether or not they look “slutty”.  Oh please! As if! and Whatever!  To those people I say get over it. This isn’t about you.  This is a comment on a society that mostly values women as sex objects and little else. This is a blog. It’s full of MY opinions. For some reason and luckily not very often a reader gets mad at what I write. I am not writing for YOU, I am writing for me. If you get something positive out of it great, if not great. Your opinions are yours to hold and not mine to stomp all over so don’t bring that $hit to my blog.

My Attempt to Market a Book

It’s tough out there for a new self published author to get their books noticed.  No worries though. I am up for the challenge.  I don’t have a marketing budget, but I am artistic and I use that skill to my advantage. I have designed every illustration and cover in all of my books. So I have been creating banners in the hope that one or two will go viral and drive readers to my books. Below are two I created this week for my book “Fierce” and “How Will You Create Positive Change”.

What does girl power mean to you? Define it yourself. You can read this and more books at Bookemon.com

How Will You Create positive Change by Leah Oviedo, agents of change, community leaders, interviews with activists

You are invited to read (and maybe purchase) my books at Bookemon.com.  PLEASE by all means feel free to share these pictures on your blog, Facebook page, Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr, and anywhere else you want.  The love is most appreciated.

What creative no-budget or low budget marketing ideas have you tried for your business?

Activism Art: The Jerks Who Give Men a Bad Reputation

This poster is on the Men Can Stop Rape website. It is as straightforward as can be about how it is up to men to share a view of respecting women. Which is good marketing considering how men are inclined to listen to direct talk as opposed to women who are taught to read between every single line.  If I was a man I would be upset about how many women hate and or feel threatened by all men because a so many of the male gender are jerks. If I was a man I would do something about how women are treated like shit by other men. I would have that much respect for my mom, my sisters, aunts, grandmothers, daughters, nieces and female friends.

Look What’s New

Thank you for reading Impower You.  My hope is that you find the information here useful and that it inspires you to make change in your life or community. I have added new pages to the site with information for everyone.  There is now a page for Critical Thinking, a page of Activism Art to encourage dissenters, a curriculum on Sexual Harassment in the Workplace, and a how-to for effective Problem Solving.

There is also a writing program that pays for stories of social action. Whether you overcame abuse or improved your community, you are invited to share a blueprint of your success so others can improve themselves and their communities.  The Survivor-Writer Program is open to anyone with a story to share and hope to give.

Our Indie Artists and Indie Authors pages are a great way to promote your art and books to a broader audience.

I started a fundraising campaign to both pay for the first stories I want to publish AND to further market Impower You to a larger segment of the population. Please join my campaign and consider contributing a $1 at IndieGoGo.co

Art Wednesday: String

After seeing some wonderful art made with the embellishment of string on Artsy Forager,  I decided to make some of my own.  This was drawn on thick paper with ink and colored pencil. I then used embroidery floss to add extra oomph! For my first try it turned out wonderfully.  It also took a long time of sitting still.  One to two hours a day for 4 days and voila!

“LOVEBIRDS” by Leah Oviedo 2012

If  you try string on paper be aware that putting the holes too near each other will result in one giant hole. I used a needle with a wide head so the string would fit. You could use a finer thread to make smaller holes and get a different effect.

My goal is to try a new art medium each month this summer. It’s kind of like art camp. I got the idea from Hot Pink Underwear.

Art Wednesday: It’s all about the hair

It’s all about the hair. What can I say, but when I was younger I always had to have some weird hair style or colors.  Nothing quite as fun as these, so that is probably why I LOVE drawing crazy hair portraits.
