January is Self-Defense Awareness Month: Time to Learn The Top Five Self Defense Moves for Women

If there’s one thing I want women to take away after they participate in one of my self-defense classes it’s how they deserve to be safe and therefore shouldn’t hesitate to fight back. Society may still teach and expect us to be “nice like sugar and spice” but that hasn’t helped so far. It is time to fight back.

I was taught to use THREE STRIKES if attacked. One strike might cause the attacker pain and two might cause them to stumble, but three will likely disable the predator.

1. Gouge the Eyes!  Place your hands in front of you with palms out, make a W shape with your thumbs and fingers and use your thumbs to apply as much pressure as possible to the predators eyeballs. THis will cause pain and make it difficult to see which direction you are run.

2. Kick the Knee! The best strike is kicking the kneecap because knees are only supposed to bend one way and it’s my all time favorite move because of that fact.  You can also knock down a predator with a kick to the side or back of the knee. This is a major joint for balance and if you can injure the knee so they are hobbling or on the ground than you will be able to put more distance between you and them.

3. Rip the Ear! Grip the predators ear, dig your nails in and yank that sucker down. This move not only causes intense pain, but it can give you DNA under your fingernails if you choose to report the crime.

4. Punch the Solar Plexus! This area above your naval and below your ribs is super sensitive, you can knock the air out of a person with a strong punch or knee strike.

5. Kick the Groin! This obviously works best with a male attacker, but it can also hurt females. Do a chorus line kick, straight up to the crotch. No need for a fancy karate kick. In fact you will cause more pain by kicking straight up with your toes and hitting the very sensitive testes.

When you’re being attacked you can attract attention by screaming “FIRE”!  This word is sadly more effective than screaming “Rape” or “Help”. People hear FIRE and think their own stuff may be in danger as opposed to thinking somebody is jokingly yelling Rape or Help.

  2. I have been teaching Krav Maga to women and girls for over 5 years now and we teach a very effective technique which should be in every woman and girls arsenal. We are a women only event, run by women, for women, and this is what we teach to women of all ages. Please help to share this advice with as many other women and girls in any way you can. It could one day be a life saver.

    This is the “groin grab” self defense technique to be used against a male attacker which is taught in many womens self defense classes, and there is actually a little trick to it…

    You’re going to take your hand and grasp between the attackers thighs underhand. Its going to feel like you’re “cradling” the testicles. Dig your fingertips into the fragile skin BEHIND the scrotum. Then, once you have a good grip, you turn your hand into a vice, with your fingers digging inwards, around the back and over the top of the testicles. If you do it right, you should feel the testes INSIDE your hand which is holding the scrotum. You want, whenever possible, to hook your fingers over and around at least one testicle. One of them is enough.

    Then, with your hands in a claw and your fingertips latched around the testes, you turn your hand sharply, as though you were turning a doorknob. Simultaneously, squeeze hard and pull the testicles away from his body as fast and as hard as you can. Do not let go of them. This is important. What happens then, is that your assailant usually screams out in pain and then tries to grab the wrist of your hand holding him in a futile attempt to try to get you to release him. Don’t. He then quickly loses one of the natural advantages he usually has over us (his strength) within a matter of seconds. Vomiting, curling over, collapsing and convulsing is common. Shock and unconsciousness can set in within 8 seconds. When he collapses, which he will, you get away to safety as quickly as possible and call for help.

    It’s never too late to perform this technique at any stage of an attack, and that even includes the option of reaching down if he’s on top of you, but it is easiest to do when the testicles are exposed and closest to you where you can grab hold of them. I’ve actually met several women in my life who have fought off their attackers in this way and one did it when her attacker was on top of her and raping her at the point he lost control. Don’t ever hold back. Some women scream while they are doing this, and some women think of a loved one being harmed to help overcome any bad feelings of hurting someone else even if they are being hurt themselves. Do whatever you have to do if you feel it helps.

    If done properly, and done with enough force, this technique can even lead to the testicles rupturing. It’s actually easier to do than most women believe, and just about all of us have the capability to injure an attackers testicles in this way – whether we are young girls still of school age, or whether we are great grandmothers. After all, if you think about it testicles are just small objects of extreme vulnerability to pain squishiness wrapped in a delicate layer of skin which offers them no protection at all from this kind of counterattack. Most importantly, this fact holds true no matter what size your attacker is, nor how strong he is. And no matter how angry he is, and how much he’s threatened what he’s going to do to you, he’s going to drop. Don’t let anyone (usually men) try to convince you otherwise.

    Our lives are worth far more than a rapists testicles.

  4. There is an amazing youtube clip which demonstrates EXACTLY what I’m talking about with the self defense technique that I mentioned.

    The clip contains the story told by a teenage girl who successfully fought off a man who attacked her within her home. She waited for the right moment before she grabbed his testicles and didn’t let go until she crushed them.

    It’s shocking that some replies to this were against her actions. No surprise though that these types of comments were only from men…

    The clip is only just over a minute long and it’s had over 50,000 views so far, from I hope mostly women and girls who can gain inspiration from it.

    It’s an absolutely brilliant clip that shows we CAN fight back successfully, no matter what our size and strength, and this teenage girl deserves an award !

  5. I think that this is a great article. It’s concise, to the point and advocates fighting back hard, which we as females are not normally encouarged to do.

    As for attacking a mans very sensitive testes, we should NEVER hold back if it means we get an oportunity to get away safely.

    Seizing the testes and then squeezing, twisting and pulling, and not letting go until the attacker is fully disabled from fighting back is becoming recognized as an *extremely effective* and relatively simple technique to use for women of all ages to effectively fight back against even the strongest of men.

    Just remember these points for this very powerful technique:
    – it’s ok if you only manage to grab one testicle
    – it doesn’t matter how big and strong the attacker is, his testicles will always remain extremely vulnerable to this attack
    – testicles are usually easier to grab when covered in loose clothing or when exposed (as would usually happen in a sex attack)
    – DO NOT LET GO OF THE TESTICLES until your attacker collapses. Squeezing the testicles hard has the effect of making a man curl over and freeze in agony before he quickly loses his strength within a matter of seconds. Unconciousness usually follows giving a great opportunity to escape.

    This knowledge should be in every girls and womans armoury.
